Live It Out

Series: Training In The Word
Title: "Live It Out"
Speaker: Jim Hammond

James 1:19-20
My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.

STEP 1: Humbly ACCEPT the word

James 1:21
Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.

James 1:22-24
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.

James 1:25-26
But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do. Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless.

STEP 2: Everyday, make time to THINK about TWO things

1 Timothy 4:16
Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

You must know the Word.
You must know Yourself.
Then you must Connect the Two.

Where do you Abide?

STEP 3: IMMERSE yourself In God's Word.

Every Jesus follower needs to make training in the Word an immersive practice

1 Timothy 4:15
Practice these things, immerse yourself in them, so that all may see your progress.

Training In The Word

Series: Training In The Word
Title: "Why Bother?"
Speaker: Jim Hammond

I. Your SHAPE is your choice:

Romans 12:2
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

II. Don't expect SPECTACULAR results with MEDIOCRE training

Luke 6:40
The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher.

Ephesians 6:4
Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

2 Timothy 3:16

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,

III. Take BABY steps

1 Peter 2:2
“Like newborn infants, desire the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow up into your salvation,”

ATTITUDE - I need this!
APPETITE - I want this!
AIM - I’ll grow from this!

Psalms 19:7-10
The instruction of the Lord is perfect, renewing one's life; the testimony of the Lord is trustworthy, making the inexperienced wise. The precepts of the Lord are right, making the heart glad; the command of the Lord is radiant, making the eyes light up. The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever; the ordinances of the Lord are reliable and altogether righteous. They are more desirable than gold — than an abundance of pure gold; and sweeter than honey dripping from a honeycomb.
